Orthodontics<\/strong> is a specialty devoted to the diagnosis, intervention and treatment of dental and skeletal malocclusions<\/strong>, or problems with our bite. Its goal is to improve function and appearance. Dental alignment problems most often stem from a person’s genetics or development.<\/p>\n

An orthodontist<\/strong>, a specialist in this branch of dentistry, carries out a treatment plan, monitors and tends to the orthodontic appliances<\/strong> and takes care of teeth, jaws and soft tissues in an effort to improve alignment.<\/p>\n

Situations that may require orthodontic treatment:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. A gap between the upper and lower jaws (from one of them either jutting out or sitting too far back)<\/li>\n
  2. An elongated face<\/li>\n
  3. Very visible upper gums<\/li>\n
  4. Teeth that are too far apart or overlapping<\/li>\n
  5. Missing teeth<\/li>\n
  6. Impacted teeth (not emerging from the gums)<\/li>\n
  7. Asymmetrical jaw or teeth<\/li>\n
  8. Lips that don\u2019t close naturally<\/li>\n
  9. Certain speech impediments<\/li>\n
  10. A cleft lip or palate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The majority of these situations can cause problems in both function and appearance. Take dental overlap; it may affect proper brushing and increase the risk of cavities and gum conditions. Or an improper bite; it can result in functional problems.<\/p>\n

    After an initial consultation, the orthodontist will let you know whether or not treatment is needed and what type of appliance
    \nmay be required. That could mean braces (metal or ceramic) or other types of fixed or removable appliances. Typically,
    \northodontic treatment lasts between one and three years. Patient cooperation, in terms of brushing and flossing, eating and taking
